  16. Diagnostics are almost at every circumstance necessary. No one changed TeX to _not_ write into a log file ...

  18. Particularly on those cheap SysV machines without truss there is no chance to find a few clues that could explain why something is not working as it should.

  20. Those who do not like the diagnostic output of xdvi or dvips might create shell aliases for them (csh syntax, put it in ~/.cshrc):

  22. alias xdvi        'xdvi \!* >& /dev/null &'
  23. alias dvips        'dvips \!* >& /dev/null &'

  25. I vote for leaving xdvi/dvips as they are.
